Always having a goal

Never stayed for a day without a goal or purpose. If one goal is achieved, she looks for another.

She kept a purpose in front of her. Not occasionally, and not only in the parts of life that get called ambition — continuously. When one thing was finished she would look for the next one, rather than sit for a day without something to be doing.

The goal was often small. It could be a piece of household work, or a practical family responsibility that needed seeing through. It could just as easily be devotional — taking up the reading of a devotional book, with a particular family member’s welfare in mind.

What was constant was the keeping of a goal, not the size of it.

“Goal” here should not be read as career ambition or measurable achievement. Her goals were as often domestic, devotional, or directed at someone else’s welfare as they were her own.
