Memories

What her family, and the people who knew her, remember.

  1. Always having a goal

    ఒక్క రోజు కూడా లక్ష్యం లేకుండా ఉండేవారు కాదు. ఒకటి సాధిస్తే మరొకటి వెతుక్కునేవారు.

She kept a purpose in front of her. Not occasionally, and not only in the parts of life that get called ambition — continuously. When one thing was finished she would look for the next one, rather than sit for a day without something to be doing.

The goal was often small. It could be a piece of household work, or a practical family responsibility that needed seeing through. It could just as easily be devotional — taking up the reading of a devotional book, with a particular family member’s welfare in mind.

  2. Everyone in the family should be well

    కుటుంబంలో అందరూ బాగుండాలి, ముందుకు రావాలి.

She carried a constant concern that everyone in the family should be well and should get on in life. Not just her own household — everyone.

She would keep turning over what could be done for them, and do whatever was actually within her reach. When there was nothing she could do directly, she would still do something: take up a devotional reading, or say prayers, for that person or for their children.

  3. She thought ahead, for generations

    కొడుకుల గురించే కాకుండా మనుమలు, వాళ్ల పిల్లలు, వాళ్ల మనుమల వరకు దీవించి బాగుండాలని కోరుకునేది.

Her blessings did not stop at her own sons. She thought in terms of the whole line ahead — grandchildren, their children, and further still — and wished all of them well.

Family Origins

Her father was Yellumahanti Narasimha Murthy Patro — Y. V. N. M. Patro — a teacher in Rajam, well known and respected in the town. His own father, Gopalam, had been a teacher too. Teaching was already in the house before she was born.

The family remembers her father’s childhood as a hard one. His mother died when he was very young, too young to have known her well, and the years that followed were difficult.

Her mother was Y. Rajaratnam, of Merakamudidam.
